Varsity Girls Volleyball
By Billy Waite

Always striving to be better, the RHS Varsity girls’ volleyball team hopes to improve last season’s record with good performances from returning varsity players and newcomers alike.

Last season, the Lady Rams finished with a record of 6-7 with wins against the Winston Churchill Bulldogs, Springbrook Blue Devils and Northwest Jaguars. The Lady Rams had only four seniors last year, but they were all important to the team’s success.

This year’s team has four new players: two seniors, one junior and one sophomore. The age and experience of the team this year will contribute to their success. With no freshmen and seven returning varsity players, the team has a lot of athleticism and experience this season.

Even with the amount of experience on the team, the Lady Rams have a lot to learn. The team lost a scrimmage 3-0 against the Walter Johnson Wildcats, a repeat of last year’s match. They had strong first and last games, but a very shaky middle. Junior Jennifer Cordero said, “The team needs some work, but once we get all the little kinks out we’ll be good.”

One of the kinks yet to be straightened out is who is going to be on the starting line this season. The Lady Rams volleyball head coach, Cynthia Hollies, is still looking at the girls she wants to put into her line-up. With 14 girls on the team, there is a lot to look at before the first game.

Another challenge for this year’s team will be to determine who will fill the key position of setter.

Last year, alumna Diane Ng was the setter and was a very important asset to the team.

Without an experienced setter, the team gets fewer chances for kills, which means fewer points. This could either hurt the team, or be the chance for another player to step up and fill the void.

It is certain this season will have its trials just as last year, but it also could be one of the best seasons for the Varsity girls’ volleyball team. With hard work and dedication, the Lady Rams could go far.
