Review: Reaper
By Lucie Blauvelt

Can you imagine working for the devil, having to gather fugitives who escaped from hell? That is the life of Sam Oliver on the new show “Reaper”, which will premiere on the CW channel September 25.

The show follows a just turned 21 year old Oliver as he figures out that he has to work for the devil. Before he was born, his parents made a promise to the devil saying that if and when they had children, their souls would be given to the devil when they turned 21.

Oliver is a character who has no grasp of his life. He dropped out of college, still lives with his parents, and works at the local hardware store. His best friend Sock is just as lousy as he is, but brings a funny twist to the show. Without him, the show would neither be funny nor very interesting.

The producers portray the devil as a clean-cut, older gentleman who is always in a suit. The devil sometimes throws in some funny jokes or puns, but is also capable of being dark and intimidating. The plot could be dark and evil, but by adding Sock and the devil’s jokes, it keeps the show entertaining and light.

In the first episode, Oliver is given the task to bounty hunt a firefighter who escaped from hell and has been setting fires to many buildings. Throughout the show, Oliver has the devil’s assistant as well as his friends to help him capture and return the firefighter.

“Reaper” is a show that is good to watch if you are in the mood for a laugh. It is not awful, but it is not like “One Tree Hill” or “Gilmore Girls” that you can faithfully watch every week and still stay interested. The story is one that can be picked up easily and can give you a good laugh every now and then.
