If you and your friends are looking for a new humorous and enticing movie to watch after a difficult week of final exams, “Juno” is definitely the movie worth rushing to.
Juno, played by Ellen Page, is a mature 16 year old who is as unique as her name. When she is accidentally impregnated by her best friend Paulie Bleeker, played by Micheal Cera, she is faced with the choice to either give the baby up for adoption or get an abortion; of course this means Juno would have to tell her parents her shameful secret.
Paulie adds a tremendous amount of humor to this already hilarious movie. After Juno tells him that she is pregnant, he, unlike many other boys his age, does not really react. He just says “Well, what are you going to do?”
Juno goes to the abortion clinic but is not able to actually go through with the abortion, so she runs home and gets on her “burger” shaped phone to debate with her best friend as to how Juno will tell her parents. Much to the audience’s surprise, the folks take it quite well and Juno’s father even goes with her to visit the adoptive family she picks from an ad.
As her tummy gets bigger, Juno continues to attend school despite the nasty looks she gets from every direction. To add another surprising twist, as the delivery date approaches, Juno and Paulie get closer, and Juno realizes her true feelings for him. She is extremely upset when she discovers Paulie is taking another girl to prom but keeps up her tough act and does not let her feelings show. After all, she is the one who broke Paulie’s heart and told him they will never be more than friends.
Near the very end of the pregnancy, Juno discovers that her picture perfect adoptive couple is not so perfect after all. The potential adoptive parents’ marriage faces a challenge as Vanessa, the adoptive mother, and her husband have a falling out over his decision to abandon the family and pursue a career in music. However, Juno knows that Vanessa will be an amazing single mother and will be able to raise the child on her own.
Despite the occasional cliché, this is a truly heartwarming movie that will have some audiences choked up at the end. Guys, be warned: unless you’re ready for some tears and emotions, opt for something a little more…masculine.
