"Juno" Soundtrack Sure to Make Listeners Smile
By Katey Webber

Listen to the “Juno” soundtrack and simply smile. As an indie soundtrack for the wonderfully unique indie movie, the “Juno” soundtrack brings together a variety of unknown artists along with retro-ish sounds.

The soundtrack features seven songs by Kimya Dawson, a 35 year old singer/songwriter of the anti-folk movement. She was formerly in the band The Moldy Peaches with bandmate Adam Green. She is responsible for six songs, including "My Rollercoaster", "Tire Swing", "Loose Lips", "Sleep", "So Nice So Smart" and "Tree Hugger." Another song included by Dawson but with The Moldy Peaches is "Anyone Else But You." Each song has a soft, soothing, blissful sound that brings a resonance with the movie.

"Whenever I hear the song 'Anyone Else But You,' I think of Juno (Ellen Page) laying on the hood of her car trying to contemplate what to do after her interaction with the adoptive parents. I like how it has a different meaning here than when Juno and Paulie (Michael Cera) sing it," said senior Anna Weber.

When Juno and Paulie sing "Anyone Else But You" it has a more upbeat tune, rather than the previous version by The Moldy Peaches. While many of the songs are blissful, others are upbeat. Within the introductory scene, each step Juno takes matches the beats of the song "All I Want Is You" by Barry Louis Polisar, bringing a happy, playful tune.

In addition to Kimya Dawson and Barry Louis Polisar, the soundtrack features other older artists such as The Kinks, Sonic Youth, Cat Power and The Velvet Underground and Matt the Hopple. While many of the songs are not recognizable, "All the Young Dudes" by Matt the Hopple gives listeners the “I know I've heard this before” feeling. Besides this song, the rest are much more unique to the movie and they fit perfectly with each part to evoke the right feelings within each scene.

Much like the “Garden State” soundtrack, the “Juno” soundtrack is one sure to top the recently played list on everyone's iPods. In comparison to the “Garden State” soundtrack, however, the “Juno” soundtrack has the same soft sound…but more quirky. “Juno” is a soundtrack (and a movie!) sure to make anyone happy.
