After an amazing season last year both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams were left without a coach for the 2008 season. The girls went 10-2 while the boys managed a record of 6-6.
Since lacrosse did not really become popular until recently it is difficult to find a coach who knows the rules and regulations of both the game itself and Montgomery County. Luckily, RHS is not the only school still looking for a coach according to principal Dr. Debra Munk—there are still schools out there hoping to find a good coach for a successful 2008 spring season.
The boys recently found a coach and athletic director Paul Farhner interviewed the candidate and offered him the job. Now the girls, on the other hand, lost their coach from last year, Janis Maloney, even after their winning record because she wanted to focus on coaching field hockey at James Hubert Blake High School. Newly appointed girls’ varsity head coach Tamika Jancewicz will lead the Lady Rams through their 2008 season.
After losing so many seniors on both the girls and boys teams this year will be tough but they still have some talent left. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams lost last year’s goalies, alumni Andy Waite and Christy Knesel; both were outstanding at protecting the net from opposing teams. However, that leaves an opening on the field for another team member to step up and shine.
Another problem both teams may encounter is not having enough people to play on a JV team, and some underclassmen may lose their varsity positions and be left with nowhere to play. Younger players will no longer be able to gain the necessary experience to eventually move up to the varsity level, and future varsity teams will be left in the dust.
Although their team has been turned upside down, the Lady Rams will prevail this season. With a lot of hard work, perseverance and effort, the girls may be able to pull out a successful record, and maybe even beat last year’s record. Come tryouts March 1, the girls will face the field in confidence.
