With all the bad influences in the world today, how can children select a role model? Reporters nowadays only seem to want to cover the stories about stars messing up or the athletes using steroids, leaving kids with no one to look up to.
The reporters should not be blamed, partly because they are just doing their jobs. The blame should rest upon those stars and athletes who act before they think. The best word to describe these people who take steroids, kill dogs, and make destructive decisions is selfish. I use selfish for the very fact that these celebrities are role models to hundreds of children. Children look up to these celebrities, but they still would rather take risks despite the knowledge of their status.
But what makes a good role model? Consider someone who works hard and performs well, while still being well spoken and responsible. This person demonstrates to children that working hard pays off. As sad as it is, people do not hear as many stories about athletes like this today.
When the Mitchell Report was released on December 13, 2007 it was truly a let down for baseball fans. I for one had been a fan of baseball all my life and now some of my favorite stars were being linked to steroids right in front of me. Stars like Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, along with Orioles player Miguel Tejada and Brian Roberts were being accused of cheating.
Now imagine what happens when children get wind of this. How are they supposed to react? How will the parents explain it to them? The fact of the matter is that children are fragile. When celebrities choose to make bad decisions, children start to think cheating and acting irresponsible is okay.
Although there are countless athletes and celebrities that cloud the airwaves with their irresponsibility, it is important to remember that there are still good role models out there. Whether it be an athlete, celebrity, mother, or father everyone needs a role model that they can depended on.
