The Honors College held an, on the spot admission for Coppin State University at RHS on February 7, awarding scholarships and expediting admission processes for interested RHS students whose SAT scores met the requirements.
“There was over $30,000 given out in scholarships,” said College Coordinator Janet Harris. The biggest asset for on the spot admissions is the essay requirement being waved. Many students struggling to get into college can seek an on the spot admission.
Criteria for the scholarship handouts had to be met. Scholarships were branched off into three different types depending on GPAs and SAT or ACT scores. Scholarships include the Merit Based Scholarship, Eagle Scholarship, and the Golden Eagle Scholarship, respectively.
Quite a few students applied for Coppin University. “There were a total of 27 students that attended. Only one student was denied,” said Harris. The process was simple. Students had to bring an official copy of their transcript along with their SAT scores to apply for a scholarship or admission.
“Students were then interviewed for about five minutes and were either accepted or denied,” said Harris. The on the spot admission handed out scholarships to students who were above the regular admission requirements, which was an unweighted 2.5 GPA and a minimum of 850 for the verbal and math portions of the SAT.
The remaining two scholarships, Eagle and Golden Eagle, were most sought out by students who attended the ceremony held at RHS. The Honors College, who was responsible for the Eagle Scholarship, required students to have an unweighted GPA of 3.0 with SAT scores of 1000 or above. The Eagle Scholarship covers not only fees, but also tuition fees.
Lastly, the Golden Eagle Scholarship included a bundle of benefits for students. This scholarship requires students to have a 3.2 GPA or above with an SAT score of 1200. For the expense, it covered tuition, fees, rooms, meals, and a free laptop.
Many students got a chance to get into college faster. More importantly, scholarships were given out with ease. Harris expects Bowie State University to be attending Rockville soon. “I hope that more schools come to Rockville so students get a chance at an on the spot admission,” said Harris.
