Rams Take A Hard Hit From Weather, Hornets Swoop In For Victory
By Anna Damone

The Damascus Hornets buzzed their way to a victory April 4. The final score was 14 to 1, and the muddy field and the tired Rams just couldn’t stop the Hornets from their continuous streaks.

Looking on the bright side, sophomore Mike Spahn scored for the Rams after winning the face-off center field a the end of the third quarter. “I was just so frustrated with the score and how the Damascus team had been playing the entire game that when I was put in center, I got really aggressive and a burst of energy just went through me,” said Spahn.

But as fans sat in the cold stands and watched the boys play, some wondered what could lead to such a disappointing loss. During half time the Hornets did a stretching routine as a team and then practiced passing and drills.

Compared to the RHS boys, who appeared to be conducting some verbal strategic sessions, the Hornets clearly had it together. Some wondered if that was the cause of the 13 point gap in the final score.

But the Rams entered the second half, a force to be reckoned with. They won the first face off in the second half and the goalie, senior Justin Yin, was on his feet and had multiple saves. But shortly after, he missed due to the fact that one Damascus player was able to run through all of the RHS defensive players in the blink of an eye.

During the third quarter, sophomore Kevin O’Brien made at least four exquisite passes across the field, moving the ball out of the defensive side of the field and farther up to center to the other goalie’s crease. “I just tried to block their offense with my body and focus on following through with all my passes,” said O’Brien.

All throughout the second half, Rockville played with more force, aggression and determination than before. Yin saved almost every ball that was shot in his goal, but Damascus already had a considerable lead. Damascus also had gotten yellow carded twice, which shows the poor sportsmanship of the team.

Unfortunately, on yellow card against Damascus was just as problematic for RHS. Number 24, junior Vinnie Curl, had just gotten the ball and was running it down the field so quickly that when the yellow flag was pulled; it actually caused him to move back. The process made all potential plays and advantages out of the question.

The boys aren’t giving up hope and are planning on going into all of their future games with more passion and determination. The game was long, wet and muddy with a disappointing outcome, but that won’t stop the boys’ love of the game and craze to win.
