Overwhelmed by the a brilliant offensive attack and an unrelenting defensive team, the Rams boys’ lacrosse team fell to the Walter Johnson Wildcats Saturday, April 19 with a final score of 18-2.
The Rams avoided the possibility of a shutout with one goal late in the first half and one in the second half. Senior attack Zach Trefzger scored his 26th goal of the season in the first half off of a fast break. Junior Ian Kirk scored his 3rd goal of the season in the second half. Overall, the Rams were held at bay throughout the afternoon by an aggressive Wildcat defense.
On an extremely hot and humid afternoon, the Rams lacked depth in the roster, with a total of 11 players present. Two influential starters, sophomore attack Ben Withnell and senior defender Nick Hummall, who have delivered solid performances all season long, were unable to attend the game. Walter Johnson had a strong team of 28 players present who were clearly superior to Rockville’s meager 11 players nearing the conclusion of the game.
Senior Jimmy Spahn and his younger brother, sophomore Michael Spahn, delivered impressive performances, displaying versatility in the roster. Jimmy started the game playing midfield, both as a long pole and short pole. Michael started as a defender, playing left wing. Both had to play defense and midfield at certain points in the game, given various circumstances. Michael has played selflessly this year, filling positions at midfield and defense where depth has lacked.
The Walter Johnson offense was headed by senior Ross Modjeska, who is captain of the attack. He scored three goals in the first half and was responsible for calling the team’s plays. Modjeska and the Walter Johnson offense utilized picks on the defense and midfield to create successful scoring opportunities.
The Wildcats had possession of the ball for the majority of the game with an impressive tandem of players who could face-off. This led to many fast breaks for Walter Johnson, with which they created many scoring opportunities. This kept the ball on the defensive side of the field for the Rams, and led to limited offensive opportunities and few goals.
Rockville currently holds a record of three wins and five losses and is hopeful to produce a winning season with four games remaining. They will play at Blake High School Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00 pm. The next home game will be Saturday, April 26 at 12:00pm against the Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles.
