RHS Trying to Go Green
By Megan Nichols

Trying to save the planet one step at a time RHS has made a system of recycling and de-bulbing lights throughout RHS in order to conserve energy, recycle and save money.

In the past few years especially last year many people have joined the environmental club also known as the Green Club. The Green Club after losing their sponsor for this upcoming school year found a new one who is chemistry teacher Mark Agnew. This year with a new sponsor they are hoping to get just as many people as last year or even more.

In the Green Club in the past year they de-bulbed two of the four lights in each light fixture in every classroom and in the hallways. As a result, they saved a lot of money which the school could use toward other things. “I did not even notice that two lights were gone,” said Junior Paris Ford. Therefore, de-bulbing two lights is not noticeable but saves RHS lots of money every month.

Also, the Green club also set up a recycling system. The blue recycling bins are for cans and bottles, the trash cans are for trash and the white cardboard boxes are for paper only. This was set up last school and as a result we have recycled a lot of paper, bottles and other recyclable materials.

A new thing this year to the recycling program is new recycling bins in the cafeteria which are for the new milk bottles. “The recycling system is a big step in making a difference in the world and I think we are doing a good job in trying to keep it going and stay strong,” said Senior Adrienne Thrasher and also a member ogf the Green Club for the past two years.

As the years pass by we are trying to find new ways to conserve more energy and save more money. “I think that in years to come RHS students will recycle more as soon as global warming is making a bigger impact on the students’ lives,” said Junior Shala Shirazi.
