Senior Robert Kirker Believes the Format for a Pep Rally Should Change.--Kyra Wood

Senior Dismayed Over Pep Rally Practices
By Robert Kirker

Pep rallies are a great chance for students to express their school spirit, but this such spirit was not expressed at RHS’s first pep rally of the school year Friday September 5.

Students at this year’s pep rally were very uninterested with this year’s events. There were no freshmen chants or class pride to go along with the usual school pride. It was almost as if the school spirit had all burned out the past three years.

It was not just the students fault however. The intensity just is not there if the school’s athletic director is telling the student population how they should be acting at sporting events throughout the year. Was this really a pep rally or just a way of addressing the entire school about a problem that administration has?

The event has also been moved from the main gym to the stadium. While this does provide for better leg room, it makes the event more quiet and controlled. This may be better for administration and security, but it almost completely takes the fun out of the pep rally. The echoes of chants and screams inside the gym gave the seniors pride and brought a cool chill to the freshmen. It was great

.

The event was also shortened to just a thirty minute time slot. Administration has to rush to allow the performers to perform and be able to introduce all the teams before the students are rushing to the buses. The rushing did not allow time for the normal fun parts of the event.

In a month RHS is having it’s second pep rally of the year for the annual homecoming event. Hopefully administration and the people running the event will learn from the mistakes of this pep rally and bring it back to the glory of years past.
