On Monday Sept. 22, senior advisory received word of a potential dramatic change in students’ schedule. SGA sponsor, Lindsay Junkins, informed members of the advisory that RHS Principal Dr. Debra Munk and others are thoroughly considering shortening the length of lunch.
The new schedule comes in the wake of what the administration sees as students’ using their allotted lunch hour irresponsibly. “[Dr. Munk’s] concern is that the people aren’t using their time to talk to teachers. Instead, they are wandering the halls, and leaving trash everywhere,” said SGA President Darryle Nditafon. “Also, there have been a lot of fights during lunch, and Dr. Munk thinks that smaller lunches will stop the problem.”
The new lunch schedule would consist of two 30 minute periods– with half the school attending lunch after fourth, the other half after fifth. In addition to the shortened length, lunches will also bear new restrictions. Students will no longer be able to visit teachers, go to clubs, or wander the halls. “Basically, we are completely restricted to the lunchroom,” said senior Sophie Reynolds, one of two advisory members who met with Dr. Munk yesterday.
The idea is not favorable among many members of senior advisory. With such a loud and overwhelming cafeteria, Reynolds enjoys her lunch in the library, and uses that time for quiet studying and finishing her work. This proposal, however, would put a stop in her ability to utilize the library during lunch.
There seems to be only one way to put a stop in this proposal. “I think the only way it’s going to change is if we change it. If people make an effort to keep the cafeteria clean, and to go get help during lunch, maybe we can stop this schedule change,” said Reynolds. “If we don’t then these new lunches are inevitable.”
