Marching Band Sees An Increase In Participation
By Billy Waite

Coupled with the recent success of the sports programs at RHS over the 2007-2008 school year and so far in the 2008-2009 year, the RHS marching band has also seen improvement and increase in membership.

Coupled with the recent success of the sports programs at RHS over the 2007-2008 school year and so far in the 2008-2009 year, the RHS marching band has also seen improvement and an increase in membership.

The marching band is comprised mostly of RHS students, but also of Earle B. Wood middle school band members. There are nine band members in the senior graduating class of 2009 including Paul Kitsoulis, Andrea Morris, Dora Bright, Daniella Krohn, Laura Cooper-Martin, Laura Weiss, Eric Alexander, Peter English and Martin Speiser.

Senior Laura Cooper-Martin is this year’s marching band drum major. In addition to Cooper-Martin, junior Sarah Cho is the assistant drum major, Morris is the brass captain, junior Rachel Schulze is the woodwind captain, Krohn is the drumline captain and sophomore Carmen Morales is the color-guard captain.

The increase in membership this year has partly contributed to their improvement. The Rams took third place in the Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade competition. This is the second year the marching band has participated in this competition, but the first year they have placed. The band has also competed in the Brunswick Veterans Day parade in previous years, placing first the past two years. This year the parade will be held Nov. 2.

At the beginning of each school year, band members go through a camp to review material for veteran marching band members, and to teach newer members so that they can participate in competitions and football games. The band performs at every home RHS varsity football game, as well as some away games.

The marching band goes through a warm-up before games and competition that includes a quick jog to get their blood flowing. They perform before the kick-off, during the half time show and at various breaks in play throughout the game.

This year in competitions and at football games, the marching band is performing selections from “The Phantom of the Opera”. The Rams perform their songs in the order of: “Phantom of the Opera”, “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again”, “Masquerade”, and “Music of the Night”.
