Tips on Avoiding Stress for Seniors
By Neysi Velasquez

In a student’s senior year, the greatest wish is to avoid stress. However, for too many students, it is impossible to reach the goal of overcoming college application stress. Nevertheless, there is always a way of beating the college application stress.

The most recommended tip would be to complete your college applications early to avoid stress. Another tip is to visit colleges before applying to them in order to narrow down your choices. Sign up for a summer interview at the colleges you plan on applying to make you stand out as the stronger applicant. Also, by starting your college essays early, stress and pointless time consumption will be reduced.

In other words, avoid procrastination. Unfortunately, this is a big a mistake seniors make, thereby leading to senioritis. While procrastination is inevitable at times, habitual procrastination can interfere with personal performance and team goals. When a project consists of interdependent tasks, a student’s procrastination can result in more stressful situations, like failing to meet deadlines and ultimately disappointing others and yourself.

However, a major cause of procrastination is distraction. In our information-rich and technology-driven world, it is more difficult than ever to avoid distractions. The dread of confronting a blank screen can lead even the most disciplined person to indulge a whim to surf the web or watch music videos. In addition to this, students can listen to iPods or even view DVDs on their computers while they work.

E-mail provides another powerful interruption, with computers constantly signaling the arrival of new messages. Nevertheless, do not forget there are two goals that a senior should accomplish in his or her senior year: be able to avoid stress from the numerous college applications and, at the same time, live up the final year of high school.
