This past winter, RHS’ only health education teacher, Carrie Roberts, won the Emerging Health Leader of the Year award for her development as an emerging health leader.
Roberts had been previously nominated for this award. The ceremony was held at Towson University on Oct. 15 at 5:00 p.m. This award was designed to acknowledge and recognize a teacher’s accomplishments in the field of health education.
“[Winning] was so unexpected. I am so happy and I feel good for getting credit and for just being recognized for this,” said Roberts. Roberts has teaching at RHS for more than three years, earning her a reputation among students as an open and effective teacher.
“Mrs. Roberts is a great teacher. She makes things fun and always tries to make us memorize things for life,” said senior Hanna Shultz. Roberts really cares about her students succeeding and she strives everyday to make her students fully understand the material.
Roberts is very enthusiastic and focused when she teaches. To her, it is very important to teach the students how to live a healthy lifestyle and to learn more about themselves. Roberts strives to keep her students on track and enthusiastic everyday when they come through the doors of her classroom.
Fittingly, when she was a high school student, Roberts took a career test that revealed that her personality matched the career choice of a health teacher. At first, she did not believe that that was what she would do in her future. In the end, she chose to take the health education path and is grateful for having done so.
Roberts feels honored that she was even nominated for this award, let alone that she won. Many students agree that Roberts deserved the award. “Mrs. Roberts explains things in a way that makes us all understand easily; I am happy she won the award,” says sophomore Curtis Jones.
The Maryland Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance is the organization responsible for the award. Students can check out the website to learn more about this award at http://mahperd.org. Whenever you see Roberts, make sure to congratulate her!
